Illinois's First Community Was Built on a Riverbank
Mahomet traces to 1832, when Daniel T. Porter platted the village he called Middletown on the west bank of the Sangamon River near its headwaters -- the first community established in what is now Champaign County. Settlers were drawn by the river's water and timber, and the village kept the Sangamon at its center even after taking the Mahomet name and incorporating in 1872.

A homesite built near a river headwater carries a different foundation story than one built on open prairie: proximity to the Sangamon means checking how a foundation handles seasonal groundwater and bank-adjacent soils, not only the clay-shrink patterns common elsewhere in the county. Mahomet's riverside lots deserve that distinction before any repair plan is proposed.
