Built for an Air Base, Not a Town Center
Rantoul's defining chapter began May 21, 1917, when Chanute Field was established as one of 32 Air Service training camps built after the U.S. entered World War I -- chosen for its level terrain and rail access. The base trained more than two million students over 76 years before closing in September 1993, and much of Rantoul's civilian growth followed the base's own construction schedule rather than a single town-founding era.
Foundations Built to Federal Schedules
Housing and buildings raised to support a working military base over eight decades were not all built to the same era or standard, and Rantoul's post-1993 civilian redevelopment adds another construction generation on top of that.
