An 1833 County Seat Built Twice
Urbana was platted in 1833 as the new Champaign County seat, but a fire on October 9, 1871 -- the day after Chicago and Peshtigo, Wisconsin burned -- destroyed much of the young city. What went up afterward, through the late-1800s and early-1900s construction boom that followed, is the historic commercial and residential stock that still defines Urbana's core today.
Reading a Rebuilt Foundation on Prairie Clay
A foundation poured or repaired in that post-1871 rebuilding era sits on the same black prairie soil found across Champaign County -- a shallow layer of dark topsoil over a yellow clay subsoil that shifts with seasonal moisture. Settlement patterns in Urbana's older core often trace less to the age of the structure than to how that clay has moved beneath it since the rebuild.
